DISNEY DECADES "50 YEARS"
Costume Design
DISNEY DECADES celebrates 50 years of
the Magic Kingdom inspired by the costumes
of the two icons themselves, Mickey and Minnie - mixed with the trends of each decade starting when it all began in 1971. The feminine looks
start with Minnie's yellow dress from the 70's and transition into the red with white polka dot look
we know today. And while Mickey's look hasn't
changed much, men's fashion certainly has,
so each look plays with ever changing style
in his classic color scheme.
"Disney Decades" is Disney-bounding
through time and meant to bring a smile
to your face. Happy Birthday, Disney World!
INTO THE WOODS
Costume Design
With this production, the director and I wanted to merge historical costuming with fantasy. Setting it in the Rococo period, we were able to have a lot of opportunity to play with more extreme silhouettes and detailing. Starting with the basic shapes of the period, we then used fabric and details representative of each characters origin, from the german-folk style trim work on the Baker's Wife's apron and Little Red's corset to the use of more Japanese inspired fabrics and styling for the Stepmother, to speak to the actress's heritage playing it. It was extremely important that each costume be an extension of the actor's portrayal of the character and bring another level of whimsy to intricately woven storyline.
ONce on this island
Costume Design
A celebration of color and heritage, every costume started with inspiration from traditional clothing from the Caribbean, Haiti, and Antilles. The gods especially incorporate beadwork into each costume like Asaka's chest medallion and Papa Ge's collar. Textiles and details are all sourced from the islands respectfully honoring the richness of storytelling and deep culture of the islands.
The TAMING OF THE SHREW
Costume Design
Staying true to the era of Shakespeare and the play, we heavily researched fashion trends of the period. In this case, we used color more creatively to show each character's growth and relation to one another. Severe dark colors and materials like leather and starched wovens play against lighter hues and delicate lace throughout the piece.
The illusion by tony kushner
Costume Design
The Illusion jumps through three time periods so the costumes were made to be distinct to each starting with Baroque/Rococo then to French Revolution and ending with Victorian. Each character had a color story, that allowed the audience to easily identify the character but also know we are know in a different time and place.
I DO, I DO
Costume Design
Set at the turn of the 20th Century, I Do, I Do, follows a couple through marriage life and its ups and downs. Because the story flows through multiple decades, it was extremely important to pay attention to the details of each period to give the audience a sense of place and time passing. From accessories to under garments, pieces also had to be rigged, under-dressed, and layered to allow quick changes with noticeable differences to appearance - including preganancy.
